Hello everyone! It is Ian Robb again and today I am going to do a tournament report on Pittsburgh and explain why I believed that Single Strike Lugia VSTAR was one of the best options for the event.

Why I picked Single Strike Lugia VSTAR

Going into the weekend, I previously wrote about how I believed that the best two decks in format were Giratina VSTAR Lost Zone Box and Fusion Mew VMAX. I expected those two decks to be some of the most played decks going into the weekend, so it made me realize that Lugia VSTAR variants were in an incredible position going into the event. With decks like Gardevoir EX going down in play, Lugia VSTAR was allowed to take over again. The only concern that I had with choosing Lugia was Charizard EX. That matchup is close to impossible for Single Strike Lugia VSTAR, unless you want to tech a Cobalion, so that Tyranitar V can one-shot a Charizard EX. I felt that taking a bad matchup with Charizard EX was worth the risk, so I ended up omitting Cobalion.

Having decided against respecting Charizard EX, Fusion Mew VMAX showed up on my radar, as it shares that mentality. I ended up deciding that Fusion Mew VMAX was not the right deck to play. Having bad matchups vs both Lugia VSTAR and any Giratina VSTAR Lost Zone player playing Drapion V was not something I wanted going into the weekend.

Considering the incredibly open metagame, the final deciding factor for why I played Lugia VSTAR was not wanting to lose to random decks. Losing to a random 1-of like Drapion V in the wrong deck is something that I like to try and avoid at tournaments. Even though that is not the end-all-be-all, minimizing “landmine” cards like that is something that I strive for at events.

Once I decided to play Single Strike Lugia VSTAR, I felt confident, albeit a bit worried, about the next day.
